A Life Shaped by Service
Saliu Atawodi’s journey has been defined by service, leadership and a continuing interest in the development of Nigeria.
Born in Idah, in present-day Kogi State, he began his education in Ajaka and Idah before attending the Nigerian Military School, Zaria. In 1972, he entered the Nigerian Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force in December 1974.
A Career in Aviation and Leadership
Aviation became an important part of Atawodi’s professional life. He undertook flying and advanced jet training in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and Pakistan, including advanced fast-jet training at RAF Valley in North Wales and further specialist training with the Pakistan Air Force. He also attended the Air War College in Karachi.
Over the course of his Nigerian Air Force career, he progressed through a series of operational, instructional and senior command appointments. His responsibilities included command of the Air Defence Group in Makurdi, leadership of the Air Weapons School at Kainji, and senior appointments at Nigerian Air Force Headquarters and Defence Headquarters.
He went on to serve as Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, Air Officer Inspections at Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, and Chief of Policy and Plans at Defence Headquarters. He retired from the Nigerian Air Force in 2008 at the rank of Air Vice Marshal.
Beyond the Military
Atawodi’s public service continued beyond his military career.
He served as Chairman of the Presidential Implementation Committee on Maritime Safety and Security, a national assignment that brought together his experience in leadership, administration and security.
His career has also included work in business and the private sector, where he has continued to engage with issues of technology, enterprise and national development.
In 2022, he became Chairman of OMNI First Network Services. He has also been involved in other business initiatives following his military career.
Community and Human Development
Community development has remained an important part of Atawodi’s story.
During his earlier public service in Benue State, he was involved with the Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure, where initiatives under his supervision included rural roads and electrification projects. His wider community involvement has included support for education and youth development.
He has also maintained a longstanding interest in sport. A keen lawn tennis player, he established the SAA Tennis Foundation to support tournaments and opportunities for young tennis players.
Recognition
Atawodi has received a number of military distinctions during his career and was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2005.
He has also received traditional recognitions from communities with which he has longstanding connections.
Continuing to Contribute
Today, Atawodi’s story extends beyond the uniform and the offices he has held.
His experience across military aviation, national assignments, business, community development and youth initiatives continues to inform his engagement with public life and national development.
For him, service has never been limited to a particular position or chapter. It has been a continuing responsibility — to contribute experience, encourage younger generations and remain engaged with the communities and country he has served.
